About this job

The brief

The owners wanted the gardens and decking lit properly rather than dotted with a few solar stakes. That meant one scheme covering garden beds, pathways, and the deck itself, wired back to the house so it runs reliably every night instead of depending on whatever charge the day gave it. Twenty four Havit fittings across the property, chosen and positioned for the job each one had to do.

Three fitting types, one scheme

Short spikes sit low in the garden beds and wash light across planting without glaring at anyone walking past. Taller spikes lift the light where it needs to carry further or clear established shrubs. Recessed deck lights sit flush in the boards, so the deck reads as lit rather than as a row of fixtures, and nothing sticks up to catch a foot or a chair leg. Mixing the three is what keeps the result looking considered rather than uniform.

Why every fitting is 316 stainless

Cape Schanck sits close enough to the water that salt carries inland on the wind and settles on everything. Standard outdoor fittings start weeping rust at the fixings and around the lens seal, and once corrosion gets into a fitting it does not stop. Grade 316 stainless is the marine specification, with a composition that holds up to chloride exposure far better than the 304 stainless commonly sold as outdoor rated. On a coastal property that difference is the whole reason the job still looks right in a few years.

One dimmer, driven by a sensor

The whole run sits on a single dimmed circuit with a sensor doing the switching, so the lights come up on their own and hold the level the owners set rather than snapping to full brightness. Running one control for the lot keeps the scheme balanced, since garden and deck lighting looks wrong the moment one zone sits brighter than the rest. It also means there is nothing to remember at the end of the night.
