About this job

Back to back with the board

The switchboard sat on the carport wall, so the wallbox went directly behind it. That is about as short as a charger cable run gets. Nothing had to be tracked around the house, no conduit runs along eaves or through a wall cavity, and the finish is a charger and a board on either side of the same wall rather than a line of trunking crossing the property.

Why the short run matters

Charging pulls a heavy current for hours at a stretch, which is a much harder ask of a cable than the short bursts most appliances draw. Over a long run that shows up as voltage drop, and voltage drop at the wallbox means the car charges slower than the hardware is capable of. Keeping the run to a couple of metres takes that problem off the table entirely, and costs less in cable while it is at it.

Why three phase

A single phase circuit puts a hard ceiling on how fast any AC wallbox can charge, no matter what the unit is rated for. With three phase available at the property the wallbox runs at its full rate, which turns an overnight charge into a top up you can do between trips. On a holiday house that is the difference between planning around the car and not thinking about it.

Its own circuit, its own protection

The charger runs on a dedicated three phase circuit from the board with its own protection, rather than sharing with anything else in the carport. A sustained load that size has no business competing with house circuits, and giving it a circuit of its own means a fault at the charger isolates the charger and leaves the rest of the property alone. The wallbox is a Mercedes branded unit, matched to the car it charges.
