What was on the wall
The property was still running on ceramic rewirable fuses, the type with a porcelain carrier and a length of fuse wire you replace by hand. They were standard for decades and they do protect the cable from overload, but that is all they do. There is no residual current protection anywhere in a board like that, which is the part modern wiring rules are built around.
What replaced it
A modern board with circuit breakers in place of the fuse carriers and safety switch protection across the circuits that call for it. Breakers reset rather than needing rewiring, so a nuisance trip stops being a torchlight job in the dark. More importantly the board now monitors for current leaking to earth, which is the fault path that actually hurts people, and it cuts supply fast enough to matter.
The fault the safety switches found
Energising the new safety switches brought an existing fault straight to the surface. That surprises people, but it is the system working exactly as intended: the old fuses had no way of seeing a small leakage to earth, so the fault had been sitting in the installation quietly doing nothing visible. The first device capable of detecting it found it within seconds. We traced it, repaired it, and only then handed the board back.
Tested before handover
Every circuit was tested and the work certified through the Energy Safe Victoria Certificate of Electrical Safety scheme before we left. On a board upgrade that step matters more than usual, because the point of the job is protection the owners cannot see working and have to be able to trust.
